In shifting students from guided practice to independent learning, teachers must address different learning styles and how that impacts student’s understanding of their learning process.

In the Fred Jones’ text, Tools for Teaching, read chapters 5-8 and complete a two page reflective response addressing the following:

1. When thinking about creating independence, in your opinion, what is the most important behavior for the teacher to exhibit and why?
2. What was the most significant new idea that you discovered about verbal responses to students and how does this align with your experience?
3. Describe a technique that will visually help create an independent learner. In what circumstances would you apply this strategy?
4. As a teacher, how can you increase retention of new learning for your students?
