1. In Coates’ article, “My President Was Black,” he describes the political rise and significance of Barack Obama. On page 20-21 of the reading Coates compares Obama to Chicago’s first African American mayor, Harold Washington.  What was the major difference between Obama’s personal experiences and Washington’s? How did this personal experience help Obama become the first Black president?

2. Discuss the connection between the wealth gap and home ownership.  Be sure to mention and explain redlining.

3. Describe how the racial and ethnic makeup of immigrants have changed in the post-1965 US by 1) discussing the nature of this policy change and 2) the general racial and ethnic makeup of pre-1965 US immigrants.
